Did you know that Auctioneers in the State of Texas are required to be licensed by the state? Did you also know that there is no Texas state issued license to be a roofing contractor?  None! There are also no insurance requirements, including worker’s comp insurance or even General Liability Insurance.  This means that anyone can claim to be a Roofing Contractor, regardless of their experience, or lack thereof.  This puts the burden of vetting and selecting a contractor squarely on the consumer.  In short, it is up to you to know who you are doing business with.

Over many years as a voluntarily licensed roofing contractor we have heard our share of horror stories.  The stories typically go one of two ways.  An unlicensed “roofer” either takes s a down payment and disappears or installs a shoddy roof and disappears. Both have given the industry in Texas a very bad reputation.

Always Choose an Accredited and Professional Roofing Company

The best way to avoid the stress and expense of dealing with a bad contractor is to do your homework and choose a professional company.  Before you hire, make sure the roofing contractor you choose has the following attributes:

  • A local, physical office
    • Drive by. Do they have office hours? Is anyone there?
  • General Liability Insurance
    • Ask to see the certificate.  Call to check that the policy is in force.
  • Worker’s Comp Insurance
  • Manufacturer Certifications
    • Manufacturers will provide training on best practices and also offer extended warranties
  • Membership in professional organizations
    • Organizations like RCAT and NTRCA have a code of ethics and encourage continuing education and installation best practices
  • References
    • Ask for references of clients with projects like yours
    • Ask for credit references from suppliers
    • Ask for professional references; ie. Insurance Agents, Realtors or Property Managers
  • Online reviews
    • Read online reviews for other customers experiences
  • BBB listing
    • Check out their BBB listing and look for complaints and/or reviews
